It was called Aquae Bilbilitanorum in Roman times, the medicinal springs that were used by those who gave the place its name are still used today for therapeutic purposes. The buildings of the spas, with their modernist airs that bring back the memory of the golden decades of this type of establishments, are aligned parallel to the road in the limestone gorge.
To defend this pass the Muslims built a fortress whose remains still stand on the left side, dominating the road and the course of the river.
The primitive fortress was conquered by El Cid and then returned to Muslim hands until Alfonso I, won it for the Christians definitively in 1120.
Alhama de Aragón has 1,223 inhabitants and its thermal waters were already used by Romans and Arabs. There are 8 springs with bicarbonate, calcium, nitrogen, arsenic, hyperthermal and radioactive waters, which spring at a temperature of 34 degrees. Historically, its castle is the oldest monument. It consists of a small enclosure and a tower of the fourteenth and fifteenth century. The parish church is baroque.
In Alhama de Aragón we must also highlight the industrial activity and traditional ceramics: the traditional pottery of Eduardo Muela and the artistic ceramics of Palacín.
